File sharing is culture, Part 1

May 14th, 2009 Viktor Basso No comments

Hello!

This post will be about the file sharing culture today. Most of the people on the Internet today, share data with one another.

What did we do before everyone had Internet?
We shared movies, music even comics and toys with our friends. If a friend of mine had a cool movie, I would borrow It. If I had a cool CD, he could borrow It.

But when the computer really stepped In, I burned a backup for my friend. And he in return made a backup of a movie I liked if I wanted It.

Maybe Napster wasn’t the ones that started It all. But they certainly got media attention. And rumors spread out all over the internet where you could get an unlimited supply of music, reached the small town of Honningsvåg. In exchange for paying my modem bills. Or steal bandwidth from school, I could download anything I ever wanted. And more.

I discovered a totally new world, where I could even find music that wasn’t on English. I didn’t have to listen to the radio, watch MTV or depend on the local music store. I could find anything I wanted, and develop my own music taste without influences besides “0KB/S” stalled Napster downloads on my 33.6K modem or the ISDN at school.

I would like to say that the Napster creators opened a new world for millions of internet users, probably put MP3 on the map. It was a newly created culture that was spreading all over the world, a pioneered technological wonder that changed the Internet from general surfing and chat, to a easy access multimedia bomb, for free.

The record companies found out about Napster and shut it down.
The big record companies did not see the possibilities with the technology and hold on to their old and technologically outdated business models.

Now Kazaa becomes quite popular. It becomes the next new thing for the “File sharing culture followers”. But Kazaa had more, including ads. This later made Kazaa Lite the preferred ad free version.

In Kazaa you could download movies, music, pictures, porn, and games. It was the next big thing for me. I discovered free Anime, could download movies I always wanted to watch. And that’s because someone on the other side shared his files to me.

I remember I was downloading Akira; there was only 1 that shared it. So I got in contact with him and asked him about recommendations on the strange but entertaining Japanese cartoons. He said I just had to download Neon Genesis Evangelion, as they were on the Kazaa network. And I did, and today. It’s still my favorite Anime series.

I felt the nostalgia hit me in the face when I saw the new special edition Evangelion 1.01 Blu-ray fan subbed rip. The first time I saw Evangelion, was on 100mb per episode avi files with really bad resolution. And I still have the originals backed up on CD-R’s today. They were shared to me 1 by 1 over the Kazaa network. And today, I watched the new Evangelion, on a 720p Bluray rip. Shared by people all over the world over torrent file sharing technology.

Technology is moving forward, Culture is moving forward. But laws and the opposing companies involved in this established culture, Hasn’t.

I grew up with this, and so did others. Must really the old generation die before this culture is fully accepted and embraced?

Pirate Bay Verdict, Swedish Postal Service To Be Sued Next!

April 20th, 2009 Viktor Basso 4 comments

Hello!

While I was following up on the Pirate Bay verdict I came across an interesting argument, don’t remember where.

If people In Sweden started to make copies of their CD’s and DVD’s, and shipped it to their friends. Then the IFPI could sue the Swedish Postal Service for compensation yes?

According to the Swedish Court verdict on the Pirate Bay, It seems they can do it now.

Suse Studio Alpha Review!

April 7th, 2009 Viktor Basso No comments

Well hello!

I have gotten a quite nice invite to Suse Studio, which allows you to make your own custom Linux Appliance based on OpenSuse.

To say it short, its Linux-Custimization for dummies, free, and it even makes you the VM-Ware M, LiveCD and USB images. You can testdrive it live and customize it even more. I JUST LOVE IT!.

Look at this Picture of my own Personal Linux Appliance called Kelzor (Based on KDE4)

You can choose a wide variaty of software you want on it, customize it to your own look and feel. Dont you just love my logo?

There are more things to improve, like the lack of XFCE and notes funktion/version tracking.

But for an alpha, its pretty darn good and impressive.
